Nosferatu the Vampire, Metropolis, The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari? anyone who has seen these films from the 1920s can't help but shudder at the mention of them. The exhibition at the Musée de Lodève rekindles the thrill, highlighting how painting and the graphic arts influenced the Expressionist cinema of the period, which was then elevated to the status of an art form in its own right. Paintings, drawings and prints by some thirty artists (A. Macke, E. Heckel, O. Dix, K. Schmidt-Rottluff, E.L. Kirchner....) are contrasted with extracts from 12 famous films.
This disturbing exploration of the Expressionist universe plunges us directly into German society between the wars, its traumas, dreams and nightmares.
